10 Mom-Influencers I Follow for Inspiration

December 7, 2021

If your Instagram feed has become dull and boring, try following some of these mom influencers for inspiration!

Have you ever heard the saying “you are what you eat“? Well, the saying can apply to anything we can consume – especially social media.

I limit my Instagram use to maybe 10 minutes a day, if that. That’s 10 minutes a day of looking at other people’s lives (and inadvertently comparing myself to others).

For me, having social media on my laptop and not installed on my phone drastically cut down on how much I was on the site.

I used to have the app on my phone and would scroll constantly until I realized that it just didn’t make me feel good. All the “connecting” and peering into friends or strangers lives felt really weird.

It’s still super weird, if you think about it! We post carefully curated pictures of our lives in hopes that others will literally “like” us.

A few months ago I had that revelation that social media wasn’t doing it for me. I would much rather be here, blogging and being honest, than posting photos trying to make other people feel some type of way.

Especially since becoming a mom, I felt like there was so much comparing on the app. Everyone had expensive baby gear or was down to their pre-pregnancy weight after like two days and it just didn’t make me feel good.

Worse, my baby hit some milestones later than other babies, so then I was comparing my baby to other babies on social media.

I hate to admit that, but it’s true.

I wasn’t feeling connected or inspired, which I consider the point of Instagram.

It was making me feel like a worse mother, wife, and woman.

That’s when I knew I needed a change.

One of the best things I did was a massive unfollow of any account that did not feed me.

More important than who I kept on my feed was who I left behind. I wrote about my experience with the dark world of baby sleep pages below. I’m so glad that I was able to see what was going on with me when I was constantly viewing those pages.

Your Baby Doesn’t Need to Sleep Through the Night

So, I did this massive unfollow and I muted dozens of friends or acquaintances that weren’t bringing me joy.

My feed is pretty sparse now, and I like it that way.

There are a few influencers I did end up keeping.

And I’ll tell you why.

I was craving honesty after my baby was born. I had such a great group of friends who gently told me hard truths of parenting. I wanted more. I wanted to see other moms who didn’t have their life together, ones that didn’t have it all figured out yet. I wanted to see other people standing up for what they believed in when it came to motherhood, not just women desperate to make a quick buck off of exploiting their kids or dragging out a gender reveal (what even are those) for a week in a half to boost engagement.

The mothers on this list aren’t constantly shilling unethical companies or just trying on clothes in front of a mirror. They are honestly sharing their stories of motherhood or doing so with style and letting you in on the behind the scenes of those perfect photo shoots.

They aren’t doing the most snarkable influencer move – making you feel inadequate so that you spend money and they get rich.

I wanted to see pictures of authentic motherhood without bounds.

I hope you check out the following accounts and let me know what you think! I think we could all use some inspiration and connection in these cold winter months!

Here are 10 mom-influencers that you can follow for some carefree parenting inspiration!

  1. Amber Fillerup Clark (@amberfillerup)
  2. Bekah Martinez (@bekah)
  3. Juila Dzafic (@lemonstripes)
  4. Steffy (@steffy)
  5. Kristen Lemmon (@kristen.lemmon)

  8. Krystal Duhaney (@krystalduhaney)
  9. Aspyn Ovard Ferris (@aspynovard)
  10. Ashley Stock (@littlemissmomma)

Do you have social media? Who do you follow for inspiration? Are you familiar with any o f the accounts above?

Here’s Why Christmas Season is the Best

December 6, 2021

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” and I will die on that hill with Andy Williams!

Christmas season is full of wonder, cookies, presents, and cheer. If I can get my shopping done early enough, Christmas season is pure JOY!

I delight in baking cookies to Christmas music with my TV fireplace on in the background. My Christmas season begins in early November and I love every second of it.

Christmas season is the best, and here’s why!

Decorations

Who doesn’t love a simple color scheme and bright, shiny lights? The actual act of decorating is a fun way to bring in in the holiday season. I love adding to my “collection” each year and having specific decor for specific places. The next item I have on my list to get is lighted outdoor reindeer. We have a big yard and I’d love to look out my window and see a herd of reindeer lit up in the night!

Christmas Music

Who doesn’t love Christmas music? I start listening in late October/early November because who’s going to stop me? They key to Christmas music is having playlists that reflect the mood – somber Christmas, joyful Christmas, religious Christmas, background Christmas, rowdy Christmas, etc. Check out my post on Christmas Compilations to Listen to this Year for some inspiration!

Food

There’s not much to say here – holiday food is it’s own animal. Sugar, sugar, and more sugar is always on the menu. I love letting loose and going to town on candy canes, Christmas cookies, and pie!

Gift Giving

One positive to getting older is starting to enjoy gift giving! I love getting people exactly what they need or ask for, or finding something unexpected they didn’t even know they wanted.

Holiday Cheer

Something changes in people once the jingle bells start ringing and the lights go up. They just become nicer, myself included. Despite how stressful the Christmas season can be, it feels like people have a little more grace with each other, at least her on Long Island.

Presents

We never want to admit, but presents are one of the best parts of the holiday season! Now that I’m a stay at home mom, I really look forward to having some gifts for myself, since I don’t get to do as much shopping as I used to. Now that I’m an adult I’m perfectly content with socks, books, and a warm scarf!

Seeing Things Through My Child’s Eyes

Ah, I saved the best for last. I saw this cheesy quote on Instagram today, “As a grown-up I’ve learned that all the “Christmas magic” I felt as a kid was really a mom who loved me so damn much” and oof I felt that! Both of my parents worked so hard to make Christmas the most special day of the year. They were so cautious about keeping us grounded in reality and gratitude but on Christmas we were spoiled rotten (or at least it felt that way).

Now, as a parent, I love recreating those enchanted moments for my daughter. I want it to be the most relaxing, magical, exceptional day for her. I want her to compare everything in her life to the excitement of Christmas morning.

This will only be her second Christmas, but I can already sense her joy and excitement when she sees the lights and decorations. She remains very confused about trees coming indoors, though.

Seeing her light up over the simplest things is the greatest gift I could ever receive. Now, if only we could figure out how to get her to sing Jingle Bells…

Agree or disagree? What’s your favorite part of Christmas? Do you think it’s overrated or are you obsessed, like me? Let me know below!

How to Survive Your 1-Year-Old’s First Blood Test

December 6, 2021

Is it time for your baby’s first year check up? Then it might be time for baby’s first blood test! I’m writing this post because I recently had to take Baby M for her first blood test and it was SO hard to find a post with all this information rolled into one!

Here are some helpful answers to common blood test questions as well as some tips to make the procedure as painless as possible.

Why do one-year-old’s need a blood test?

Blood tests are prescribed for the one year checkup to test for lead and anemia. According to Maya Peds, first year bloodwork tests for anemia and lead levels.

Will my one-year-old need a blood test?

Yes, your one-year-old will most likely need a blood test. This can help your doctor monitor iron and lead levels as well as create a baseline for your little one’s future blood tests.

How will by one-year-old’s blood be drawn?

Believe it or not, phlebotomists are able to do a standard arm puncture blood test on a baby. However, if this isn’t possible, they can do a finger prick. A finger prick may sound easier, but it will take considerably longer to get the same amount of blood as a vein draw.

When newborns’ blood is tested in the hospital it is usually taken from the heel.

Can I hold my toddler or baby during their blood test?

Yes, you can hold your baby or toddler during their blood test! You will most likely have to help hold them still. It will also be a comfort for them to have you close, rather than being held by a stranger.

How do I make a blood test easier for my one-year-old?

Here are some ways that you can make a blood test easier for your little one!

  • Prepare the day before by keeping them hydrated (here’s a note from Phlebotomy USA on why it’s important to drink water before a blood test)
  • Pack your bag for success! Here’s what I brought in my diaper bag
    • A few toys
    • An ice pack
    • A charged phone
    • Lollipops (for myself, in case I felt woozy)
    • Water
    • A blanket
  • Use videos and music to keep your little one calm
  • Dress them in clothing that can be moved for the test (we opted for a loose long sleeve shirt)
  • Be prepared for tears and screaming
  • Have a plan for afterwards, they will want to cuddle and rest
  • Nurse your baby if you are still breastfeeding, for comfort

Anything else that can be used to comfort your baby is recommended!

How do I help my one-year-old recover from a blood test?

Rest and hydration are super important after a blood test. Your baby may be tired after all that emotional output, and need a nap when they get home. You may want to schedule their test for a time when you can be home with them after. Make sure to offer lots of water for hydration.

How long does it take to get baby’s blood test results?

Assuming nothing is wrong and it’s a routine test, you can expect results back in less than a week. If you don’t hear back after that, assume that “no news is good news”, but check in with you pediatrician if you’re concerned.

My Baby’s First Blood Test

Let me start this by saying that I am terrified of blood. I can’t tell you why, because I don’t know why. I’ve felt woozy and nauseous around blood every since I was a child. It doesn’t matter if it’s a finger prick or a bloody nose, I almost always feel faint.

I’ve fainted so many times in doctor’s offices. Even someone talking about blood makes me woozy. I thought I would never, ever, get over it.

Then I got pregnant.

I’m not sure if it was the mama bear hormones or what, but my anxiety around blood lessened significantly. I handled all of those blood tests like a champ. I was so proud of myself.

Of course, 3 months postpartum I went to get a shot and was feeling so confident about my new superpower….Right after I had to lie down on a hallway bench, gulping down apple juice given to me by a kind nurse who saw me turn white as a ghost at the sight of the needle.

Maybe next pregnancy!

Anyways…back to my daughter’s first blood test…

Whew, was I nervous for this one! Usually, I just whisk her away for doctor’s appointments, but this time, I knew I had to prepare.

I made sure to explain to her that we were going to the doctors and they would be giving her a little test and that it might hurt. I didn’t want to tell her that it would be painless or easy. I explained that it might be uncomfortable, but it will be quick. I told her that the nurses were there to help her.

I don’t know if she understood any of this, but I think it made me feel a little less bad. It’s really mentally difficult to have to restrain your child for a procedure. I think I get more upset about it than she does.

The day before, I offered water constantly so that she would be hydrated. I’ve learned from my own previous blood tests that this is key!

Once we were in the office, I stayed calm and collected, like it was no big deal. Baby M smiled at people in the waiting room and was totally fine until the nurse went to take her arm.

She gently poked around for a vein on her arm, but was unable to find one. So, they had to do a finger prick. I’m sure it was maybe four minutes at the most, but it felt like forever. Baby M would go back and forth between rigid-back screaming to curious babbler.

The nurses were so sweet; one administered the prick while the other took out some toys and danced them around in front of her.

I didn’t look at the pricking. I told Baby M how great she was doing and focused on controlling my breathing.

After it was over, they gave her a big bandage on her finger, which made her irate. They told me to keep it on her for 20 minutes, but it didn’t even make it with us to the car.

All in all, it was a great experience for a terrible situation. We came home, had a late breakfast, and she was off for her nap.

Next time, I know that as long as I stay calm, we can get through it!

Has your little one gotten a blood test yet? How did they handle it? How did you handle it?

Do you have a fear of blood?

Does your baby or toddler love cars and trucks? Why not encourage their interests by introducing some books on the topic!

This post may contain affiliate links. This means that I may make a small commission off of products that are purchased through these links, at no cost to you. You can read more about this process here.

Reading is so important for babies brains. Books are also a great add-on to a nighttime or nap routine. We love using board books in our house because they are pretty much indestructible and withstand cleaning.

These books would make an excellent baby shower gift or stocking stuffer for the holidays! One of the best things about books as a gift is they are educational and last a long time. I know we began reading to our daughter when she was in-utero and she still enjoys the same books today, as a one-year-old!

Here are 10 books on cars and things that go for your little one’s bookshelf!

Red Car, Green Car by Priddy Books

Counting Cars by Priddy Books

Stocking Stuffers for Babies

December 2, 2021

Christmas is almost here! Maybe you’ve already started your shopping or maybe you’re already done!

If you’re like me, you always forget one crucial component of gift giving – stockings!

This post contains affiliate links. This means that I may make a small commission off of products that are purchased through these links, at no cost to you. You can read more about this process here.

We have needlepoint stockings from Land’s End and they are decorative and functional. I love that my family will have heirloom quality Christmas decorations for the rest of their lives. They each have their name embroidered into the stocking, too.

Growing up, our stockings were filled with “little” wrapped gifts that we would open around the Christmas breakfast table (waffles and bacon, always). I remember being unenthused as a small child, because after all it takes some growing up to realize that the best things really do come in the smallest packages!

How did stockings become a part of Christmas?

Well, it’s complicated. There are many stories floating around the internet. Here is the most common one, as explained on Bustle:

While there is no known written record of the Christmas stocking’s origins, in many folk tales, the stocking is linked to the idea of Saint Nicholas (or Santa Claus, as he is colloquially known) as a gift giver. The poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” published nearly 200 years ago in 1823, clearly describes the importance of stockings: “The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,/In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.”

– see more on Bustle.com

Do I Need to Do Christmas Stockings?

Nope! You can always skip stockings for kids and they won’t know any different. Especially with little, little kids, these aren’t necessities. We plan on putting things we already need to buy for our baby wrapped in her stocking, like socks. There is no need to break the bank for babies who are going to be more excited for tissue paper.

However, if stockings are your jam and your looking for some inexpensive, useful gifts, look no further!

Check out these simple last-minute stocking stuffers sure to surprise your little one on Christmas morning.

Mommy and Baby Day Off Schedule

December 1, 2021

I love being able to take a day off here and there to spend with my daughter!

I know what you’re probably thinking, “isn’t every day a day off for a stay-at-home-mom?”…

Yes and no!

Whether it’s cooking, cleaning, running errands or going to appointments, there’s always more to be done. I also have this blog, which I work on up to 20 hours a week!

I try to get all my chores and responsibilities out of the way so that I can have days with my one-year-old that are purely centered around us bonding and her enjoyment.

Taking a day off from my to-do list and spending quality time with my daughter is one of the most gratifying things I can do as a parent.

If you’re a working mom, taking a personal day and pulling your baby out of daycare can form memories that can last a lifetime!

Some of my fondest memories with my mom were the ones where we just did a few fun things around town.

I remember one day in middle school we went to the movies and the book store and I got to get my ears pierced. It wasn’t the most spectacular day, but I remember it as being on of the best days of my life!

I loved having that time with my mom and getting to do a few special things.

Since my daughter is only one and it’s just a random Wednesday, we are going to do a few fun things today!

You can download the PDF schedule if you’d like to do this with your little one!

mommy-daughter-day-off-schedule-leaf-and-steelDownload

We love to go to Target and pick out snacks like avocados, puffs, and blueberries.

Petco is just around the corner, so we always hit up their aquatic section to watch the fish swim round and round.

Next, a nap and snack are necessary!

When Baby M wakes up we can make a fort in the living room with blankets and chairs and eat our lunch under there!

Then, we are going to paint some DIY ornaments for Christmas followed by a quick bath.

After another nap Baby M will have a snack in her little wagon (since today is a sunny winter day)

Next, we’ll have a dance party (loving the Moana soundtrack) and a pasta party.

We’ll end the day with cuddles and books before bed time!

What more does a little one need? I love being able to spoil my daughter with quality time and simple pleasures rather than gifts and toys.

Another thing I love about this schedule is that it honors her meal and nap routine, which gives me a little break and ensures she’ll get a good night’s sleep!

What do you do with your little one on your day off?

Do you have somewhere special you like to go or thing you like to do?

Let me know below!
