How do triplets happen?

Triplets can happen in a few different ways, and it’s pretty fascinating. The most common way is through a process called hyperovulation, where the mother’s body releases more than one egg during ovulation, and all those eggs are fertilized.

This leads to fraternal triplets, who are siblings but not identical. Identical triplets happen when a single fertilized egg splits into three embryos. And sometimes, a mix of both can happen – maybe two eggs are fertilized, and then one of them splits, resulting in a set of identical twins and one fraternal sibling. Genetics, fertility treatments, and even a bit of luck can all play a role in how triplets come to be.

When do you start to show with multiples?

When you’re pregnant with multiples, you typically start to show earlier than you would with a single baby. With my two pregnancies, I remember showing around 14-16 weeks (maybe even later with the first), but with multiples, it can be much sooner, sometimes as early as 8-10 weeks.

Since your body is carrying more than one baby, your uterus expands faster to make room for the growing little ones. Every body is different, of course, but most moms expecting multiples notice their bump popping out earlier than they did with their previous pregnancies!
