Why it’s so hard to find a break…
The relentless nature of parenting, coupled with the societal expectations and the internal pressure we place on ourselves, can create a perfect storm leading to burnout. Moms often find themselves navigating a complex web of responsibilities, and the term “default parent” encapsulates the reality of being the go-to person for everything. From making decisions about school or childcare to managing household chores, the load can quickly become too much.
Work schedules further complicate the situation, leaving little room for personal time. The constant back-and-forth between professional obligations and family needs can create a sense of being trapped in a never-ending cycle. The guilt associated with trying to meet the needs of everyone in the family, coupled with societal expectations, can contribute significantly to the burnout experience.
It’s essential to recognize these challenges and acknowledge the toll they take on both physical and mental well-being. Understanding the factors contributing to burnout is the first step in finding effective strategies to break the cycle and prioritize self-care.
…and why those breaks don’t leave us feeling refreshed.
I’ll speak for myself: multitasking is the biggest threat to my peace. Parenting is all multitasking. It’s all deadlines and planning and urgency (whether real or imagined).
Moms, in particular, are notorious for attempting to do it all simultaneously, thinking they can catch a moment of peace while folding laundry, responding to emails, and entertaining the kids.
Multitasking, however, turns what could be a moment of respite into just another item on the to-do list. Instead of feeling refreshed, we end up feeling more drained because we haven’t allowed ourselves the luxury of fully engaging in a single activity. The mental strain of dividing attention among various tasks diminishes the quality of the break, leaving us feeling unsatisfied.
Moreover, the pervasive mom guilt can sneak in, even during those precious moments of pause. If we’re preoccupied with guilt for taking a break, it defeats the purpose entirely. It’s crucial to redefine what constitutes a break and acknowledge that simple, necessary activities like showering or attending to personal needs shouldn’t be categorized as breaks—they’re basic self-care necessities.
In the pursuit of genuine relaxation, understanding the pitfalls of multitasking and releasing unnecessary guilt are crucial steps toward reclaiming truly refreshing breaks.
How to Find Peace as a Busy Mom
- Delegate Responsibilities: Entrust your kids to someone you genuinely trust, whether it’s a partner, family member, or close friend. Knowing your children are in capable hands allows you to fully detach and recharge. For us, this has always been family.
- Choose Nourishing Activities: Opt for activities that genuinely bring you joy and fulfillment rather than draining your energy. Whether it’s reading a book, practicing a hobby, or taking a leisurely walk, focus on things that uplift your spirits. Mindless scrolling is not nourishing your soul!
- Establish Consistent Breaks: Make breaks a non-negotiable part of your routine. By scheduling regular moments for yourself, you create a sense of predictability and prioritize self-care in your busy life.
- Set Personal Goals: Channel your energy into personal growth by setting achievable goals. Whether it’s reading a certain number of books, learning a new skill, or dedicating time to a hobby, having purposeful objectives enhances the quality of your breaks.
- Mindful Breathing Exercises: Incorporate short mindfulness or breathing exercises into your breaks. Taking a few minutes to center yourself can significantly reduce stress and enhance your overall well-being. This doesn’t have to be reserved for breaks- Baby M has learned to exercise deep breathing, and it’s a great practice to do together!
- Unplug from Technology: Disconnect from screens during your breaks. Constant digital engagement can contribute to feelings of overwhelm. Embrace the quiet and give your mind a chance to rest. I’m really enjoying Cal Newport’s book, Deep Work, which focuses on this.
- Explore New Hobbies: Use your breaks to explore hobbies or activities you’ve always wanted to try. Whether it’s painting, gardening, or learning a musical instrument, engaging in new pursuits adds excitement and variety to your routine.
- Connect with Other Moms: Foster connections with fellow moms who understand the challenges you face. Share experiences, seek advice, and build a supportive network. Socializing with others who share similar experiences can be rejuvenating.
- Practice Gratitude: Take a moment during your breaks to reflect on positive aspects of your life. Expressing gratitude can shift your mindset and promote a more optimistic outlook, even in the midst of a busy schedule.
In the chaos of motherhood, finding peace is both a challenge and a necessity. Remember, you deserve those moments of tranquility. Embrace the journey, savor the breaks, and prioritize self-care. Because in taking care of yourself, you’re better equipped to care for those you love. Here’s to more moments of peace in your busy mom life.
