A little background on Bodhi…
Bodhi is my teenage Vizsla. We got him when my toddler was 16 months old and it was hell on earth. I cover more of it in my blog post “Let’s Talk Puppy Blues”. He was a demonic little beast. He bit constantly, listened for nothing, and created so much inner turmoil in me that I wanted to give him back.
Now that he’s older, I couldn’t imagine life without him. He’s a part of the family and has grown into a loyal, hilarious, and sweet little gentleman.
Questions I get about my Vizsla
I’ve decided to cover some questions I get all the time from people who are curious about the breed!
How much is a purebred Vizsla?
Bodhi was $1,300. I get into the nitty-gritty of every single expense of dog ownership in this post about How Much We Spent on Our Puppy in the First Month.
Are Vizslas hypoallergenic?
Vizslas are not considered hypoallergenic dogs. They have a short, smooth coat that doesn’t trap allergens as much as longer-haired breeds, but they do shed. Additionally, Vizslas produce dander and can still potentially trigger allergies in individuals who are sensitive to dog allergens. If you have allergies, it’s essential to spend time with a Vizsla before bringing one into your home to see if you have any allergic reactions. Regular grooming and cleaning can also help minimize allergen exposure.
Are Vizslas good family dogs?
Vizslas are often considered excellent family dogs due to their affectionate, loyal, and friendly nature. They tend to form strong bonds with their human family members and are known for being good with children. However, it’s important to keep in mind that Vizslas are high-energy dogs that require regular exercise and mental stimulation. They thrive in active families who can provide them with the attention and physical activity they need. With proper training and socialization, Vizslas can be wonderful companions and make a great addition to family life.
Can Vizslas handle cold weather? Hot weather?
This was one point of consideration that almost led us to getting a different breed. We do get some snow and occasional extreme heat here on Long Island.
Vizslas are a breed that can struggle with extreme cold and hot weather conditions. They have a short coat that provides little insulation against cold temperatures, making them vulnerable to cold weather. In frigid conditions, it’s essential to provide them with proper protection like coats and shelter. Bodhi loves the snow! Biggest concern here is him running too fast and slipping in it.
Similarly, Vizslas are not well-suited for extremely hot weather due to their limited ability to regulate body temperature. They can easily overheat, so it’s crucial to keep them hydrated, provide shade, and avoid strenuous exercise during hot days. I was doing yard work in 95 degree weather yesterday, and after 5 minutes outside, Bodhi was eagerly waiting at the door to go back inside!
Overall, Vizslas are more comfortable in moderate climates, and their well-being should be carefully considered in extreme weather conditions.
Are Vizslas good guard dogs? Can they protect you?
Vizslas are known for their friendly and affectionate nature, making them more inclined to be welcoming to strangers rather than aggressive guard dogs. While they may alert you to unfamiliar sounds or visitors, their primary traits are loyalty and companionship rather than protection.
However, with proper training and socialization, Vizslas can still provide a sense of security and serve as watchful family members. We taught Bodhi “speak” and I used it once on a night walk when I felt a little unsafe. The majority of strangers are scared of a loud, barking dog.
How the heck did our Vizsla get to 75 lb?
We have no idea! His tail isn’t docked, so that has to count for a pound of two. I want to stress that he isn’t overweight. He is visually balanced and when viewed from the top, is a normal weight. Our vet says he looks great!
How to Tire out a 1-Year-Old Vizsla
Yes, it is possible to wear out a Vizsla!
This can be divided into three categories: physical exercise, mental games, and scent work.
Firstly, physical exercise is the obvious, running, walking, swimming, etc.
Secondly, mental games are anything that challenges your pup to use their head. This can be as simple as learning a new trick or as complex as mastering an agility course.
Lastly, scentwork is a dog using their nose to detect an outcome, anything from detecting cancer to finding a hidden toy in your backyard. Sniffing wears out Bodhi! Sometimes taking a sniff-walk is more exhausting than a traditional walk.
Can Vizslas get too much exercise?
Yes, they can! Especially when they’re little puppies. We were advised to not run our V on pavement until 18 months, when growth plates have formed. This PetMD article lists worn paw pads, heat sickness, behavioral changes, sore muscles and joint injury as signs of an over-exercised pup.
The Best Toys for a Vizsla
Here are some of our favorite toys for Bodhi that have survived the chew test! When I took an inventory of our toys to compile this list I noticed that the majority of toys that have lasted are either Chuckit! Or KONG brand.
Weight limits for Vizslas
Here are the typical weights for Vizslas, according to the AKC:
Average Adult Weight:
Male Vizslas: 55-65 pounds
Female Vizslas: 45-55 pounds
Newborn Vizslas:
Approximately 1 pound at birth
18 Month Old Vizsla Biting and Nipping Update
Yup, our one-year-old and change Vizsla still gets mouthy. He does it when he’s tired at the end of the day and doesn’t have a distraction. I’ll be snuggling with him and he’ll just hold my hand in his mouth. Not so cute now that he’s huge! We give a firm “no bite” followed by a “get your toy” (a seriously underrated command).
Although he nips, you might be wondering if my Vizsla is a good dog- he’s the best! I love him dearly and wouldn’t trade his crazy brown butt for anything.
An adult vizsla and toddler update
As I covered in “Life with My 8-Week-Old Vizsla“, my toddler was the only person that Bodhi didn’t bite as a puppy.
He’s always had a fondness and gentleness for her. The only issues they’ve had is he has knocked her over a few times and has stolen food off her plate a few times (getting better). She is in charge of getting him water and loves to help give him baths.
There’s nothing like watching your kid and your dog grow up together!
