I was overjoyed to find out that I was due with with baby number two. I felt prepared to bring another life in the world and to handle a newborn and a toddler. What I wasn’t prepared for was the sheer exhaustion that overcame me once I hit five weeks. If you’ve experienced this you know what I’m talking about it’s so far beyond just being tired. It’s been tired in your bones, with every fiber of your being.
Then, a few weeks later the morning sickness hit. I wasn’t prepared to deal with throwing up while trying to take care of a toddler and getting everything I needed to get done with constant nausea.
If you’re anything like me you’ve come across the desperation of looking for any relief from the first trimester mess. Here are the things that made my first trimester a little bit more bearable the second time around.
What makes the first trimester so hard?
The first trimester, oh boy! It’s like entering a rollercoaster blindfolded. Your body’s working overtime to create a little human, and it comes with its unique set of challenges. From morning sickness that can strike at any time (seriously, why is it called morning sickness?) to the fatigue that makes you question if you’ve run a marathon in your sleep – it’s a wild ride.
Throw in the emotional whirlwind and the constant urge to snack on pickles and ice cream, and you’ve got the perfect storm. But hey, it’s all part of the magical journey of bringing new life into the world.
Is the first trimester easier with the second pregnancy?
Oh, the seasoned journey of the second trimester – it’s like going through familiar territory with a few surprises thrown in. Many mamas find the second pregnancy’s first trimester to be a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, you’ve got the wisdom from the first rodeo – you know what to expect, what cravings might hit, and that morning sickness might extend beyond mornings.
With my last pregnancy, I was furloughed (one of the few upsides to the events of 2020) and I didn’t have to do anything except nap and watch TV. This time has been a completely different story.
Juggling the demands of daily life with the fatigue and nausea can still throw you for a loop. Yet, the beauty lies in the familiarity – you’re not navigating this mysterious terrain for the first time.
How to make the first trimester easier, the second time around
- Arrange Childcare: Don’t hesitate to seek help from family or friends to give you some time off to rest. Having someone look after your toddler can be a game-changer.
- Embrace Takeout: Cooking might not be your top priority, and that’s perfectly okay. Opt for takeout or ready-made meals to ease the burden of meal preparation.
- Create a Nap Haven: Bring your toddler’s books and toys into bed, creating a cozy space for both of you to nap. It’s a win-win – you get rest, and your toddler stays entertained.
- Learn to Say No: Recognize your limits and don’t be afraid to decline invitations or commitments. This is a time to prioritize your well-being and conserve your energy.
- Delegate Responsibilities: Don’t hesitate to ask your partner for support. Whether it’s taking over some household chores or managing bedtime routines, sharing responsibilities can make a significant difference.
- Prioritize Self-Care: Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Whether it’s a warm bath, a short walk, or a quiet moment with a book, find activities that rejuvenate you.
- Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Keep water and healthy snacks within easy reach. Hydration and proper nutrition are crucial for your well-being during the first trimester.
- Establish a Routine: Predictability can bring a sense of calm. Establish a daily routine that accommodates your energy levels and allows for moments of rest.
- Communicate with Your Partner: Keep the lines of communication open with your partner. Share your feelings, concerns, and needs so that they can offer the support you require.
- Explore Relaxation Techniques: Incorporate relaxation techniques into your day, such as deep breathing exercises or prenatal yoga. These can help manage stress and promote overall well-being.
- Connect with Other Moms: Reach out to other moms who have experienced a second pregnancy. Their insights and shared experiences can be both comforting and valuable.
- Complain: I usually fall prey to toxic positivity and feeling like I can’t be grateful AND miserable at the same time. Pregnancy kind of sucks, and it’s okay to complain about the way that you feel.
As we wrap up our journey through the first trimester, I hope this survival kit provides you with the support and comfort you need. Remember, you’re not alone on this ride, and your experience, though uniquely yours, is shared by many amazing moms out there.
