Today we’re detailing the best ways to embrace autumn and make the most of the fall season!
Fall is my absolute favorite season. I love the cooler temperatures, the earlier sunsets, the falling leaves.

Hygge
What is hygge? According to the New Yorker, hygge is “a Danish term defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” Pronounced “hoo-guh,” the word is said to have no direct translation in English, though “cozy” comes close. It derives from a sixteenth-century Norwegian term, hugga, meaning “to comfort” or “to console,” which is related to the English word “hug.” Associated with relaxation, indulgence, and gratitude, hygge has long been considered a part of the Danish national character.”
It’s easy to practice hygge by unplugging, lighting some candles, changing into a cozy outfit, and grabbing a book and some tea.
Saving errands for after dark
I really enjoy saving my errands for nighttime in the fall. Maybe it’s because stores are quieter, but in reality it tricks me into thinking I’m getting ahead for the next day. It can help “extend the day”, which is extremely helpful when the sun sets at 4:30pm some days.
Get Outside
I definitely need to check out There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather: A Scandinavian Mom’s Secrets for Raising Healthy, Resilient, and Confident Kids.
We try to get outside no matter the weather. My daughter loves playing in the rain, and I have no problem bundling up and taking the dog on a walk during a squall.
Getting in touch with nature and enjoying the beautiful weather is one of my favorite parts of the autumn season.
One of my most consistent outdoor routines is taking my dog for a walk around the block while my husband puts our daughter to sleep.
We bundle up with coats and flashlights so that drivers can see us! The other night we went in a rainstorm. There was something so freeing about just accepting that we were going to get soaked and need to dry off later. My dog loved it and I felt so connected to Mother Nature.
Use a Happy Light
I love using light therapy to help stave off the winter blues. I definitely am prone to feeling more low-energy as I take in less sunlight. This is the light box that I’ve had forever.
What does a happy light do? According to Popular Science, “The goal of light therapy is to correct the disruption to the body’s internal clock brought on by the changing seasons. Happy lamps are designed to imitate natural sunlight and correct disturbances to the circadian rhythm. In the morning hours, these lamps bring the sunlight that’s missing from the outside world indoors to let the body know it’s daytime and ensure its internal clock is set correctly.”
I love my “happy light“. I use it for 15 minutes every morning while I drink my coffee. I start to use in once I really notice the sunset time change.
Cook Something New
Turkey chili, homemade bagels, and French bread are my usual fall go-to’s, but this year I want to try something new.
I love Pinch of Yum so this fall I really want to try to make their Sheet Pan Meatballs with Tomato Salad and Green Sauce and Life Changing Instant Pot Beef Stew recipes.
Set the Mood
In the same vein as hygge, making conscious choices about your space is like #1 for me as far as embracing fall. My baby and I call it “getting cozy”. We light some candles, put on classical music, and open the windows to feel the fall air. I also love turning on the “fireplace” on Netflix, since we don’t have a real one.
Youtube mixes are another easy way to set the mood. Just look for any type of “fall mix” or “fall background music” and you’re set.

Those are our top ways to embrace autumn!

30 Fall-Themed Lifestyle Blog Ideas
Today we’re rounding up 30 fall themed lifestyle blog ideas to bring more traffic this autumn!
Fall is a big deal here on Long Island. The weather is beautiful, the leaves change in waves, pumpkin patches and corn mazes cover the North Fork. After some unbearably humid and hot summers, fall feels like a gift.

I love creating fall-themed posts for my blog that match my love for fall! I really wanted to creat this post prior to #blogtober, so that I would have something to reference for ideas.
I’ve written before about how much I got out of #blogtober21 and writing consistently. Writing challenges are an excellent way to become a consistent blogger. Whether you blog for money or treat it as a labor of love, fall is the perfect time to start writing.
Why do content creators produce more content at the end of the year?
Every wonder why your favorite blogger/influencer/YouTuber puts out seemingly infinite amounts of content or videos at the end of the year?
The answer is obvious and the answer is always the same!
Money.
Ad networks and brand deals typically pay more at the end of the year. Brands want to use up their marketing budgets in preparation for the next year.
More content = more clicks = more money.
I remember when I spent more time on YouTube and would see #Vlogmas and think that it sounded absolutely exhausting, it didn’t make sense. Wouldn’t you want to take December off? That’s where the money makes it worth it, of course.
I personally don’t want to spend my favorite time of year (October-December) in front of a computer screen, which is why I schedule a lot of my posts!
5 Blogging Lessons I Learned in 2021
Fall Writing Challenge Tips
Before we get to the list of 30 fall-themed lifestyle blog ideas, let’s look at some tips for creating fall content.
Get outside of the house and get inspired.
Get up and go outside! Enjoy the weather while it lasts. Being out in the world is a surefire way for my brain to start firing off ideas for blog topics.
Go through your current daily routine.
Do you do anything different now that it’s fall? Do you change up the vegetables you eat or drive the long way home so that you can see the changing leaves? Your daily routine may hold more subject matter than you know.
I know I have a special candle that I bring out for fall (I feel like such a loser typing that out but my people know what I mean). I love changing out my wreath and drinking out of pumpkin cups. We also do a lot more chilis and savory meals when the humidity tapers off.
Revamp your own favorite blog posts.
If you’ve completed this list or are looking for more inspiration, why not scroll back to your old blog posts?
Maybe last year you wrote about autumn date ideas, and this year your single. You could write about solo date ideas or fall activities for groups. Maybe this year you had a major life chage, like a new work opportunity or had a child, which changed your perspective on an ideal autumn day.
Fresh perspectives on old topics is nothing new, but it’s a great place to start when you run out of ideas.
Try a new blogging challenge like #Blogtober.
What is blogtober? According to Tea & Cake for the Soul, “Blogtober is where bloggers from all over the world publish a post every day during the month of October. They also link up with other bloggers who are also taking part to share the love.”
You can see my post How to Prepare for Blogtober 2022 for more information about how to get started! I highly recommend blogging challenges if you’re a beginner or you’re stuck in a “writing rut”.
I believe writing is a muscle and by exercising it everyday, we get faster and our writing grows stronger.
I also have a post Why You Should Try Blogtober, which shares my results from last year.

June in Review
Happy July!
Man, am I ready for summer to be over. I write this covered in poison ivy, mosquito bites, and one exquisitely swollen bee sting.
Have you ever heard that we’re just pre-programmed to love summer because of our association with school ending? I think it’s true.
I will take any season but summer. Maine, or even Canada is starting to sound good. The older I get, the harder the heat gets.
I know, I know, I’m complaining. It’s just not for me. Do you actually like summer? Tell me I’m not alone…
Anyways, here’s a little recap from June.
The Not-So-Great:
I’m allergic to bees. Not like “oh I don’t like this thing so I’m going to say I have an allergy” – like an allergy-allergy. I got stung twice in 3 weeks by honeybees on the same foot and went on the same yummy antibiotics. Apparently honeybees don’t sting unless provoked (read: stepped on). Me and my epi-pen are ready to fight.
I didn’t try anything new. I didn’t read any books this month and I didn’t listen to any new music. June felt weirdly busy, even though I don’t think I actually did much.
The Good:
I spent most days outside. Despite the bees and other brazen fauna, I think the time outside served me well. There’s nothing like sunshine. I would like to thank my dog and toddler for this.
I got some blog posts up. Not as many as I’d like, of course 😉
I spent time with family and friends. That’s what’s really important to me, at the end of the day. There’s no substitute for quality time with loved ones.
Summer is almost over. It’s July- that means were almost done! I can’t wait for pumpkins and colder weather and for all the bugs to go back underground.
How was your June? Did you learn anything new? Do anything fun?
Any big plans for July?

30 Day Motherhood Blogging Challenge
Today I’m sharing 30 writing prompts for mom blogs! If you’re feeling stuck and in need of inspiration when you sit down to write, make sure you check out the ideas below!
Willpower and Motivation
Have you ever heard the idea that “willpower is a finite resource”? If you haven’t, then listen up.
You will run out of willpower.
You will not feel motivated every day.
You will procrastinate because it feels good in the moment.
If you’ve ever tried to do anything consistently (work out, get up early, WRITE), then you know what I’m talking about.
See this quote from Verywell:
Willpower is a limited resource. The idea behind this theory is that willpower is like a muscle in that it can be both strengthened and fatigued. For example, if you exhaust yourself doing sprints, you will be less able to perform other physical tasks.
Kendra Cherry, Verywell, “What is Ego Depletion?”
Habits
So, it’s not just you.
It can be frustrating to have a goal but be unable to reach it due to a lack of willpower or energy.
The good news is there’s a way to hack it.
The answer lies in habits.
Creating small, daily habits will improve your blog. There’s no doubt that writing every day will add more content to your site. Creating a number of Pins for Pinterest or connecting with a few other bloggers on Instagram will bring in more traffic.
There’s no better way to build up your blog than to practice consistency.
In 2021, I found myself in a place with lots of time to blog and not a lot of direction. In the beginning of the year I was sporadically posting and I didn’t feel like I was getting anything out of it.
How I Get Over Writer’s Block
I created some new habits.
I started getting up early so that I could write, uninterrupted.
I learned how to shut out distractions and how to do writing sprints.
I stopped waiting for inspiration to hit.
I stopped waiting for the motivation to come.
I leaned into my habits and the results that I got were invaluable. Not only did I add dozens of articles to my site, but I got into a writing rhythm. Writing every single day made me a better writer.
I got better at transferring my thoughts and formatting my articles.
Having those habits made me more efficient and creative.
Now, writing and working on my blog is as natural as making my bed or feeding the cat.
Here’s my favorite way to build new habits. The Harvard Business Review refers to it as “Piggybacking on a daily task”.
The benefit of micro habits is that you should be able to perform it with minimal effort every day. It’s important to execute on a new ritual daily so it becomes second nature, and if it’s small enough, you won’t be as tempted to defer your task from one day to the next. However, no matter the size of the task, it’s easy to get distracted, make excuses, or forget. Perform your new action at the same time as (or right before) an action you do without thinking. Need to read a paragraph each night? You can do that while brushing your teeth. Meditating for 30 seconds each day? Check that off your list while waiting for your coffee to brew.
Sabrina Nawaz, Harvard Business Review, “To Achieve Big Goals, Start with Small Habits”
Blogging Challenges
A blogging challenge is an excellent way to create a writing rhythm.
In my experience, writing every day is what works best for me. Whether it’s an hour or just ten minutes, writing everyday enforces that habit.
Blogtober was my first writing challenge. To this day, October 2021 serves as my statistical inspiration for blogging. I added 31 new posts and I saw my traffic almost double. I loved having a challenge to keep me consistent, with a finish line in sight.
5 Blogging Lessons I Learned in 2021
You can choose an online blogging challenge or create your own! I love using prompts when I’m feeling “stuck” or uninspired.
I compiled 30 writing prompts for motherhood/early childhood blogs. If writing a whole post every day is too much right now, try keeping the posts short or spread them out over two months.
Another way to do this challenge is to set a word count objective and to tailor each post to meet that goal.
You can move these around or alter them to fit your blog’s niche.
These prompts are also excellent for Instagram pages, if you aren’t a fan of long form content.

March in Review
Goodbye March! You were insane.
March was a crazy month.
This post contains affiliate links. This means that I may make a small commission off of products that are purchased through these links, at no cost to you. You can read more about this process here.
I got a Vizsla puppy! I feel like I have two toddlers. He is full of energy and curiosity.
5 Reasons We Chose a Vizsla as Our Family Dog

The Not-Great:
- This puppy is killing me. We paid for a Vizsla and got a piranha. This dog BITES. He is constantly nipping. We redirect with toys, yelp loudly, do time outs- you name it, we’ve tried it. This wackadoo just wants human flesh. Also, there’s nothing like living on a 20 minute timer to make sure he doesn’t have an accident in the house. He’s lucky he’s so cute.
- I usually feel better this time of year. This year, I don’t. And I think sleep is the answer! This is typically the time of year when I feel “lighter” and “happier”. I think the sleep deprivation from the puppy and baby is preventing this! Hoping to feel “spring-ier” soon!

The Good:
- I started an Instagram. I know, I know, I was all about kicking Instagram earlier in the year. I still am, for my own personal account. I did start an official Leaf and Steel account that is just centered around this blog! I had been putting it off for awhile.
- The dog is learning a few commands. Let me tell you, “leave it” is the most underrated command. “Sit” isn’t really that helpful. “Paw” is adorable. We are working so hard at training, and I think he’s starting to get the hang of it.
- Calendar. I finally got a calendar for my fridge. Now, coordinating child care and dinner is so much simpler! My husband and I both know what nights we need to be out or keep free. I can’t believe I’ve managed to stay married for 3+ years without a shared calendar. It even has a little notes section so I can list things we need to talk about. Not bad for under $10!

April Hopes
- Creative writing. I desperately want to set aside some time to do more creative writing. My goal is to participate in a Reedsy prompt competition this month. I have a lot of stories in my drafts that could use some attention!
- Build up the blog. I mean, this has been my goal for the past 5-6 years, right? I have some posts planned that I’m pretty excited about. I hope I can get back to posting a few times a week!

How I Get Over Writer’s Block
I haven’t posted consistently in quite a long time.
I have the time.
I have the tools.
I have the ideas.
And I have writer’s block.

My Writer’s Block
When I’m on a roll with creating posts here, working on my WIP, or journaling, I can’t even remember what it feels like to have writer’s block.
These days, it is hard to imagine a time when I was pumping out a blog post every day, or writing 1000+ words on my WIP before I went to bed. I know I’ll get back to that place eventually!.
For right now, I need to use some of my old tricks to keep things moving in my writing life.
Writing has always been an outlet for me. Taking time each day to write makes me happy. Plain and simple. That makes me a better mom, wife, friend and member of society. Waking up early or staying up late to prioritize that half hour/hours to write is very important to me.
Why You Should Try Blogtober

It all started a few weeks ago, when everyone in my house got sick. I was (obviously) prioritizing sleep to recover, grabbing an extra twenty minutes of shut eye anywhere I could. I stopped writing every day.
Another big change was we decided to make a major change in our life (soon to be revealed), so I have spent many of my daughter’s nap times researching that.
I miss writing! I miss the flow of it. I can’t wait to use some of these tricks to get back into the swing of things.
How to Take Care of Your Baby When You’re Sick
How to Get Over Writer’s Block
Here are the ways I try to get over writer’s block!
Get Inspired
Pinterest is my favorite place to go for inspiration! It’s a great place to find ideas for blog posts and writing topics. I have several boards that I used to save inspiration for my personal life, too.
You can find me on Pinterest here.
Set a Clear Goal
Setting a clear goal can be extremely helpful if you set your own schedule and deadlines. I use Google Calendar to set my writing goals for the month. This helps keep on a posting schedule and gets all of my ideas out of my head and into a condensed, easy-to-access space.
Break it Down
When you’re struggling with a goal as broad as “work on my novel” or “write a blog post”, it can be beneficial to break that down even further. It’s much more conducive to set small goals like “write 500 words” or “write just one page”. Another great way to do this is writing sprints…
Do a Writing Sprint
A writing sprint is when you set a timer and just pound the keyboard for a set amount of time. 15 minute writing sprints work best for me. There is no editing, no wasting time trying to find the perfect word, no distractions – just writing!
Change the Scenery
Sometimes you just need to change the scenery! Going to the local library or coffee shop can inspire a newfound level of productivity. There’s something about being in a semi-public space that keeps me focused. I guess I don’t want someone to look over at my screen and think “that lady came to the library just to scroll on Zillow”.
Use a Different Tool
I always write on my computer. Actually, I always write in a Google Drive document, Comic Sans font, size 11 pt.
Writing on paper, using talk-to-text in my Notes app, or recording myself gets the creative juices flowing. There’s something magical that happens when I walk around my kitchen, talking into my talk-to-text app. I can speak much faster than I can type, right?
It allows me to be more fluid with my ideas, and I’m temporarily relieved of the burden of typos and formatting.
Those are the ways I can ease writer’s block!
Do you get writer’s block? Do any of these tips work for you?
Let me know below!

Reflecting and Moving On: Goodbye 2021
Last year I wrote a post called “If Not Now, When?”. It’s about how the years have passed on and I haven’t changed. It’s about how I wanted to do more with this blog and the only thing standing in my way was me.
Well, I wrote 96 posts this year. I had brand deals. I made some affiliate and ad income. I feel really proud about where I’ve taken this blog. The only difference between this year and the last was that I sat down and wrote.

I feel good about 2021 as a whole. I’m proud of myself. I feel like I did more than just get through it. If you just got through it, that’s more than enough.
I’m 27 and I have a new lease on life. Something inside me changed this year.
I’ve been thinking about big bangs.
I watched a family member go through a breakup and move across the country. A big bang.
I watched my friend lose her brother, and leave her job to pursue her art. A big bang.
I was always waiting for these little things to change the fiber of who I was. I thought if I drank more water or had more money or exercised more I would become who I wanted to be.
I was always waiting on more.
I just needed my own big bang.
I was monkey-barring my way through life. I had settled into this mindset that certain things I wanted were out of reach.
And then I had my daughter. My big bang.
She made me feel good enough. She made me feel worthy of all things good. I never want her to feel limited. That’s how I’ve felt as an adult, limited.
I’m going into 2022 with infinite opportunity. I hope you do the same.
Humbly,
O.

Winter Quote Wednesday
Welcome to Winter Quote Wednesday!
I was sad when Fall Friday Favorites came to an end and was looking for another way to do a weekly check in with a purpose.
Enter Winter Quote Wednesday. Each week I’ll share a quote that I love and why, and I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!
So, this week’s quote is from Bill Phillips,
“The difference between who you are and who you want to be, is what you do.”
Bill Phillips

Something in me snapped when I heard this quote. I’m sure I read it before and have heard variations of it a dozen times, but something just clicked.
The space between where I am now and where I want to be is what I do.
A lot of the time, the things that I want feel really far away. They feel impossible.
I always lose myself in the doing. It’s the piece that’s always missing.
I always wanted to be a blogger, but never wrote.
I wanted to do yoga, but never laid down my mat.
I wanted to bake bread, but never bothered to try.
I was waiting to win the lottery but never bothered to by a ticket.
It’s so simple now. In the words of Nike, “just do it”, right?
I feel like this is one of those things I’ve always known but didn’t internalize until recently.
Anyways, I love this quote. It’s one I reference often.
What do you think of it? Is there somewhere you could be in life if you just did something different?

Why You Should Try Blogtober
It might be November, but I wanted to share my experience with this years Blogtober tag!
What is Blogtober?
Blogtober is an online “event” where bloggers publish a post on their blog every single day in October.
Why I Tried Blogtober
I didn’t set out to participate in Blogtober21, it just sort of happened. As someone who reads a lot of blogs, I started to see the tag everywhere! Seeing such high volume of posts under #Blogtober21 and my love of a good portmanteau got me curious.

What I Did
Okay, so I didn’t post every day in October. I published 29 posts, which was just 1 short of my 30 posts goal for that month. You can blame my child’s 12 month sleep regression for that, ha!
I did sit down to write just about every week day. Like so many writers, I tend to focus on selecting images, contacting sponsors, analyzing stats, and doing just about everything I can besides publishing content. Getting in that daily habit of writing has changed the way I look at producing content.
What I Learned
Having a daily schedule of writing during my baby’s first nap and hitting publish (just about) every day made writing easier. I have my systems in place now. It’s just gotten easier. It used to take me days to research, write, format and edit an article. Now, I have streamlined that system down to a few hours at most.
It’s also showed me that “writing what you know” is some of the most accurate advice out there. Because I’m writing about things I’m genuinely either interested in, actively researching, or truly love, the writing is just a natural part of that.
I was consistent with my writing and pinning on Pinterest. I essentially doubled my traffic. I started to see more and more results from Google, Yahoo and Bing. I even was able to pick up a few partnerships and got to engage with so many of my readers.
More traffic led to more Amazon Affiliate sales and more ad revenue.
I was super pleased to see my hard work paying off.
Posting every week day, working with sponsors, and making a measly income did something incredible. It finally made me feel like a blogger. I can fall into some major bouts of imposter syndrome in most areas of my life. This month I really felt like I was reaping the emotional benefits of putting in the foot work.

Why YOU Should Try Blogtober22
Put me down in the calendar for Blogtober22!
I will definitely be doing Blogtober22. Just based on how it raised my stats alone, I’m in. But, I also was so impressed by the discipline and passion it takes to complete a challenge like this.
Next year, I plan on publishing 31 posts in October, to get the full effect.
You should try Blogtober because it can grow your audience, inspire diligence, and can help you get out of that writing rut!
Did you participate in #Blogtober? If you did, what did you learn? Would you do it again? Let me know below!
